Baseball has a reputation for being a boring sport. While the No Errors team considers baseball to be one of the greatest sports of all time, there are a few things that make the game a bit slow-paced.

There are too many games

One of the things that makes baseball seem boring is the sheer number of games in the season. Major League Baseball teams play 162 games during the regular season. If a team makes it to the Division Series, Championship Series, and World Series, they may play up to 20 additionalgames.

While high school and college teams play fewer games than MLB each season, there are still a substantial amount. Baseball players can stay engaged throughout the season because they’re part of the action, but for spectators, it’s easy to lose enthusiasm.

Games are too slow

Another complaint about baseball is that the games seem to drag on far too long. Unlike fast-paced games like basketball or football, baseball involves many pauses. There is a predictable pattern of bursts of activity followed by a pause before the next pitch. Each time a team switches batters or an inning ends, there is a lull in the action.

MLB games include nine innings with the possibility of extra innings in the event of a tie. Games played by middle and high school teams have fewer innings, but the players are also less skilled, leading to an even slower pace. This leads to a long game of start-and-stop action. This brings us to the next point…

Games are too long

The nine or more innings of a Major League game typically last for two to three hours, but there isn’t really an upper limit on how long a game can last. The longest game in history lasted for 33 innings, took over eight hours, and required three days to complete. Your chances of ever having to sit through a game that long are probably slim. However, even a three-hour game can feel like an eternity in a crowded stadium with long bathroom lines, over-priced refreshments, and uncomfortable seats.

The best players play infrequently

Every baseball team has a few players that are fan favorites. Unfortunately, the nature of baseball means that the best players don’t see continuous action. For instance, if you have a favorite hitter, you may only see him a few times per game, depending on how many innings are played. The story is similar with a favorite pitcher: each team only pitches for about half of a game, so the pitcher will have limited time on the field.

It’s so quiet

Unless it’s the bottom of the 9th or a team is in the playoffs, baseball can be pretty quiet. Most of the time, you won’t experience the same kind of intensity as you would at a football game. The slow pace of the game and frequent pauses can make it hard for spectators to get excited. Plus, baseball is a game of precision and accuracy. Whether batting or pitching, players take their time to carefully prepare themselves, creating an atmosphere of anticipatory silence for players and spectators alike.

Despite everything, baseball remains the great American pastime. Lots of long, slow-paced games, infrequent action by star players, and a quiet atmosphere in the stadium can make baseball feel a bit boring. The next time you find yourself yawning during a baseball game, pause for a moment and appreciate the amazing skill of the players. Baseball may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the No Errors team wouldn’t have it any other way.
